Warrior’s Hot Cocoa

I’m sharing this hot cocoa a little late, and truthfully, I hope you don’t make it this year. Not because it’s not something absolutely delicious and nutritious that you’d be foolish not to try, but because making this hot cocoa might mean that you’ve just finished moving hundreds of pounds of snow and can no longer feel your fingers or the tip of your nose.

I really hope we’re done with that for at least a few more months.

But when Dear Mother Nature decides to curse us with her wrath again, you’ll at least have something to look forward to after tackling the front walkways with a shovel and crazily insisting on doing the deck out back too. (Fine, maybe you let your husband use the snow blower on the driveway.) This is no doubt one of the simplest forms of lifting heavy things, and all good lifting sessions deserve to be followed up with something protein-rich and delicious. So when it’s all said and done, you can declare myself a snow-movin’ warrior and come inside to a mug of this rich and creamy does-your-body-good just as much as it warms-your-chilly-bones hot cocoa.

Then again, you don’t really have to wait until you’ve shoveled a soccer field’s worth of snow to enjoy a steamy cup of this hot cocoa. You could easily convince yourself that you deserve it next time your hubby shovels the walkway as you mentally cheer him on from the couch, underneath a blanket. Or simply because it’s a freak night in the middle of August when the evening low dips to 35ºF. But really, who needs excuses to enjoy something that tastes amazing and is nutritiously superior to it’s sugar-laden counterpart? Not me.

Warrior’s Hot Cocoa

1 cup (8oz) unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/2 scoop (15gm) chocolate casein protein powder, such as Optimum Nutrition Chocolate Peanut Butter Casein Protein Powder*
1 tablespoon (5gm) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
1 packet Truvia Natural Sweetener, or other sweetener to taste

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Heat gently in the microwave or on the stove top until hot.

*Casein protein powder is the key this rich and creamy hot cocoa; whey protein will be a bit grainier.

I'm all for drinking this out of sympathy for those who have to shovel. Or just because it's a friday afternoon and I feel like drinking something chocolatey and good for my health. Sounds delicious!

Your photo is pretty much perfect – the froth, the scrunched napkin, the glasses. Wonderful.

This is such a cool idea! I only have whey at the moment but I might run out and try a bit casein. I love the idea of a healthy hot chocolate. I love your photo too! so gorgeous! Makes me wish I had that big cup of hot chocolate at my desk right now!

Fun. What a creative recipe and thanks for the note on the protein powder, otherwise I would have had zero clue.

Critique for shabby apple giveaway:The presentation for this photo is really beautiful. However, I think you could amp it up even more. Think Martha Stewart Living–sometimes adding subtle details to a photo (a ribbon, patterned tablecloth, etc.) can take it to the next editorial level.
