Shabby Apple GIVEAWAY! |
It’s fitting that Shabby Apple got in touch with me while I’ve been thinking so much about the importance of appearances and how to flatter my food, so to speak. Shabby Apple, if you haven’t heard, is an online retailer of women’s apparel. I’ve admired their pieces many a time, so I was pretty thrilled that they found me too.
What makes Shabby Apple so unique is that their pieces represent a return to the original concept of a dress: a one-piece outfit that can be worn comfortably in any situation without the need for cardigans on top or camisoles underneath to make them “more appropriate.” I don’t know about you, but as a twenty-something I find it a challenge for find a dress that fits well and looks just right whether it’s being worn out at a trendy restaurant or to a religious service, for example. Shabby Apple women’s dresses, combining classic cuts with fresh, young designs, truly fit the bill. If you still need another reason to like them, consider this: Shabby Apple is not only committed to helping women dress better, they want all women to have the opportunity to live better as well. Five percent of all sales are donated to Unitus, a non-profit organization which provides access to financial services for women at the bottom of the economic chain in India. Thanks to support from Shabby Apple customers, these women and their children have a wonderful opportunity to better their lives.
In another act of generosity, Shabby Apple is going to give one of my readers a free dress. This marks my first non-food- or cooking-related giveaway, and I’m happy that it’s with a company that’s doing great things for women everywhere. If you’re the lucky lady, you get to choose one of the four dresses shown below. How cool is that? The only catch to be aware of is that I might just come knocking on your door to raid your closet. You see, I’m going to be personally jealous of the winner because these dresses were chosen by yours truly. Obviously, I chose the ones I’d most like to wear – and I hope you will like them too!
On to the dresses…
Dress number one, pictured below, is the Sierra Nevada I’m most drawn to its cascading ruffly top, waist-defining ribbon, universally flattering jewel tone. I also love that it can be dressed up with a flirty headband and pumps, or worn casually with a pair of boots.
Next is Cotton Candy. The print is bold and girly, but tastefully broken up with the wide waistband. Any day in this dress is automatically going to be a fun one.
The Ingrid dress, with its black sateen pencil skirt and frilly white top is a must-have for any fashionista. This dress feels sophisticated and safe enough to stand in for a 9-5 suit, but would move effortlessly into whatever after-hours activities await.
Finally, I can’t resist the Bali Ha’i’. First of all, anyone who knows me will see right away that it’s “my color.” Secondly, I love its softly scooping neckline with a row of ruffles extending all the way around. Form-fitting but with flattering seams, this is dress would be a definite head-turner.
See something you like? Here’s how you can make it yours: “Like” Shabby Apple on Facebook, and leave a comment here letting me know that you did.
– Tweet about this giveaway, mentioning @shabbyapple and@carascravings and linking to this post (hint: use the share buttons below to quickly grab a shortened url and access to your twitter account)
– Tell your Facebook friends about this giveaway, with a link to this post (hint: the share buttons below make this a cinch!)
– Critique one of my photos. Yes, really! I told you I’ve been trying hard, so take a minute to browse around my recent posts and tell me about a photo you like, or one that you have a specific idea about how it could have been done better. (I realize I’m taking a big chance here, but I’m hoping I’ll receive more constructive criticism than internet bullying!)
The contest will close on Sunday, March 6th at 11:59pm, and I’ll choose a random winner on Monday.
Not feeling so lucky? Good news, there’s something for the rest of us too. Any of my readers can use the coupon code carascravings10off at checkout to receive 10% off your purchase!

Hmm, your pictures are all lovely, so I really can't offer much. I guess the best I can give is that the focus seems off on this (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KITf0GCt46g/TVU5EXPhkII/AAAAAAAACX4/wLBwq2Rmxv4/s400/DSC_0815.JPG) picture and that it's a little plain. The picture at the top of that post has a really cool napkin with some bright colors, to balance the basically black and white of the cookie and plate.

As far as a critique of a photo, I don't have a specific one in mind (from what I've seen, they all seem to make me drool), but I was wondering something…I'm a new follower so I haven't seen very many of your previous posts, but have you considered doing photos of your prep work? Flowersofthesun — March 2, 2011 @ 7:21 pm
i would cretique the strawberry cookie photo. It is great and I love the out of focus plate in the background but i think there is too much design on the napkin that its sitting on that takes away from the featured focal point.
Dejah — March 2, 2011 @ 7:24 pm
I think your pictures are good, with nice lighting. In photo classes that I have taken, we are warned not to place objects in the center of the photo. They are less appealing that way. A lot of yours are centered, but one that isn't centered, that is nice, was the picture for Gingerly eggplant and edemame stew.
Ashley Marie Armstrong — March 2, 2011 @ 7:29 pm
I love the close up photo of the ingredients for the beet soup you recently posted. Beets are one of my favorite vegetables, and the colors are just awesome. Some of my favorite photos are those that show all of the raw ingredients.

Hi there, I'm critiquing the photos at http://carascravings.blogspot.com/2011/02/fennel-rutabaga-and-white-bean-hash.html. I noticed that you like colorful photos. I'd think about where you want to focus the color. For example, the food is colorful, so I'd go for a bare background to provide contrast. The second photo is the best of the bunch. In the first and third photos, the color gets "lost" because a lot's going on in the background. Also, since they're similar, I think you only need the first or third photo, not both.

My favorite aspect of your photos is the background – or maybe the setting. You get the food but you also get the real setting…the napkins, wooden spoons, cloth napkins, etc.

Shrimp in Creamy Horseradish Sauce:The backlighting throws me off a little. I love how pink shrimp gets, but it's hard to see in that lighting. Looks tasty, though.!I'm assuming we're supposed to put one comment for each thing we do, right?

I love the close up photo of the ingredients for the beet soup you recently posted. Beets are one of my favorite vegetables, and the colors are just awesome. Some of my favorite photos are those that show all of the raw ingredients.
Dejah — March 29, 2011 @ 2:06 am
I think your pictures are good, with nice lighting. In photo classes that I have taken, we are warned not to place objects in the center of the photo. They are less appealing that way. A lot of yours are centered, but one that isn't centered, that is nice, was the picture for Gingerly eggplant and edemame stew.
