{Giveaway!} Come HIIT it with Me and Cathe!

Here’s a question for you all: When you do cardio are you just plugging along or do you HIIT it? Confused on what that means? HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training. And why do we HIIT? There is plenty of evidence out there that HIIT is the best kind of cardio to maximize your weight loss efforts while trying to build or maintain muscle. And, it’s your most effective choice when you don’t have much time: it’s short, but certainly not sweet!

Kids, I don’t mean setting the elliptical to “weight loss interval mode” and going along pretending there’s a different between high and low. HIIT is manually switching up our speed or resistance so that you’re going balls-to-the-wall for a short burst of time, working so hard that your only choice is to truly come to a rest when it’s over. When you are truly doing HIIT, you should be working so hard in that 30-60 second blast that you could not possibly keep it up for any longer. That’s how you know you’re doing it right! Or finding the nearest track and sprinting the long sides then walking the curves. Or, plugging in Cathe Friedrich’s HIIT dvd and busting out the heart-pumping plyo drills for 30-4o seconds – and finding yourself unable to do much but walk around for the breaks. There are many other ways you can HIIT it too, these are just some of my favorite examples.

I’ve been HIITing and working out with Cathe for quite some time. Back in the day I used to do all my workouts in the gym. Some days I would have loved to just avoid the place altogether and still get a worthwhile workout in, but I was convinced that there were no DVD’s that were tough enough for ME. Workout DVDs, I thought, were for those just starting out and afraid of gyms and not in great shape yet. There was no way a DVD could give me the same burn I got in the gym or going for a run. Granted, I had seen some pretty lame programs. But then someone recommended Cathe’s dvd’s. I started with KickMax and IMAX 3, and soon realized this was no joke, even for those of us who like to consider ourselves “advanced”! Later I added CardioFusion to my collection, another butt-kicking thriller. When I found out that Cathe was releasing a new HIIT dvd as part of her Shock Cardio series, I didn’t hesitate to pre-order it. I’m so glad I’ve added this to my collection – it’s the perfect thing to do when I just need something quick, or to mix in with segments from my other Cathe DVD’s for a truly intense and effective workout. And because it actually has not one, not two, but THREE seperate 30 minute workouts, I’ll never get bored or too comfortable with any of them.

So why am I telling you all of this? Well, a few weeks ago I was honored when Cathe’s newsletter published my Amazingly Creamy Pumpkin Penne as one of their Featured Healthy Recipes! And as if that wasn’t enough, they gave me a generous gift certificate to use in the Cathe Shop. But I figured, why not spread the love?

That’s why I would like to give one lucky reader a chance to HIIT it with Cathe. I really love this DVD, and I think everyone should get to try it out – if you already know and love HIIT, it will be a great item to have at home; and if you’re not sure if your interval training is really HIIT, you’ll get to find out! The only caveat is that this program requires an aerobic step, and because I think it would be a little useless to own the DVD if you don’t already own a step, I have selected an alternative which I think will give you a very similar workout full of intense cardio bursts. (But, I do think an aerobic step is a great investment – if you are thinking of getting one, definitely do it!)  Another member of the Shock Cardio series, Cardio Core Circuit promises to deliver an intense blast of circuits, with the added bonus of core work. I haven’t tried this DVD yet myself, but the description and customer reviews make this sound like a real hardcore challenge – in fact, I will probably make it my next Cathe purchase for myself.

So to recap: the winner of this giveaway will receive their choice of Cathe’s HIIT cardio DVD or Cardio Core Circuit DVD.

And here’s how you’re going to win it. The more comments you leave, the better your chances!

1) Leave a comment here letting me know if you’re already a Cathe follower, and if not, why you’d like to become one.
2) Let me know – do you HIIT it? How often? How do you do it? Inside, outside, what kind of work and how do you time your intervals? Are you a HIIT believer?
3) Follow me on Twitter and leave a comment letting me know.
4) Tweet about this giveaway to your followes and leave a comment letting me know you did.
5) Mention this giveaway on your blog with a link back here. Again, leave a comment letting me know about that.
6) Find another DVD in the Cathe shop that you’d love to try.
7) Check out my recipe for Pumpkin Penne and tell me what you think about the ingredients. Have you tried cottage cheese in creamy sauces or soups? Is it on your blog? If so, show me! If not, tell me your favorite way to eat cottage cheese.

The deadline for entering the contest is Friday, July 16th. I will announce the winner on July 17th and you’ll let  me know which DVD you’d like. That gives you plenty of time. Go! And good luck!

I do not HIIT it. I keep meaning to try by using the Arc-Trainer or trying it on the treadmill. That would make it easier to time the intervals.

I have tried the Pumpkin Penne before and we really liked it. I usually don't use cottage cheese in recipes too much just because it makes my husband sad to see his absolute favorite snack being used up. In our house, our favorite way to eat cottage cheese is simply scooped up with stone wheat crackers.

Pumpkin Penne…. I made it once and didn't like it. I don't think it was your recipe, but the kind of pumpkin I used. The punpkin flavor was just off. I used organic canned pumpkin because during "the great pumpkin outage of 2009" my grocery store was all out of their brand and Libby's. So I paid over $3 for a can of pumpkin that smelled gross and tasted worse. I do plan on making it again with good old Libby's when the pumpkin mood strikes again. I do think the cottage cheese in the sauce is genius though. Love that!

I haven't tried the Pumpkin Penne – I think an earlier poster mentioned that it was difficult to find pumpkin during the last holiday season. I will have to try to look again, because I think my hubs would love that recipe. However, I have a well-worn Mac&Cheese recipe that uses low fat or fat free cottage cheese and it works so well! I normally don't like cottage cheese, but that Mac&Cheese is my go-to recipe for bringing a dish to a party, so now I have it in the fridge on a semi-regular basis.

I LOVE using cottage cheese and / or lowfat ricotta in creamy pasta dishes. You don't need much to make the sauce smooth and creamy!

Also, your pumpkin penne recipe was one of the first ones I tried – and it is amazing! I had never thought to use cottage cheese like that before, but it worked so well! Unfortunately I made it long before I started my blog, so no photos or recap…but that's just a reason to make it again! 🙂

It looks like the Shock Cardio series would be the best fit for me. I'm trying to squeeze in 30-40 minute workouts before work.

I've made your pumpkin penne. It was the first time I'd used cottage cheese in a cream sauce, and I thought it worked really well. I'm looking forward to trying it again in the fall when I start thinking about pumpkin all the time.

Great giveaway!! I've never done any of the Cathe dvds, but they sound right up my alley!! I definitely believe in the power of HIIT workouts, and they make you feel so powerful (and pooped). I'd love to add this to my collection, way to get the word out that there is way more effective and fun ways to get a great workout!

So after reading your blog about this I tried an at-home HIIT workout on my treadmill. I did sprints for 1 minute and walked for 2 minutes. It was a great workout in a shorter amount of time! Thanks for that! I'm definitely going to incorporate more HIIT into my work outs!

I do not HIIT it. I keep meaning to try by using the Arc-Trainer or trying it on the treadmill. That would make it easier to time the intervals.
