The Simple Things in Life

A bag of frozen shrimp, a bottle of teriyaki sauce, a can of pineapple chunks, a bag of frozen veggies and some rice – sometimes, that’s all you need. But of course, it can’t be just any bottle of teriyaki. Tonight, I don’t give you much real cooking, but I do have a product rave. Soy Vey Island Teriyaki, which I purchased at Trader Joe’s, is probably one of the best tasting sauces in a bottle I have ever purchased. It’s sweet, salty and spicy, with distinct flavors of ginger and sesame, and who can resist the fun Jewish/Chinese fusion bottle? (Sidenote: according to their website, the Soy Vey product line is the creation of a Jewish guy and a Chinese girl, and all products are Kosher.)
For an extremely easy and flavorful dinner, I thawed and peeled some frozen shrimp and let them marinate for about an hour in the sauce. I then threaded them on skewers alternating with pineapple chunks. I would have have preferred fresh, but since I couldn’t find any at a great price and canned was on sale for $1, I went the frugal route. These cook very quickly on the grill, just a couple minutes on each side over low heat will do it. Meanwhile, I cooked some basmati rice in a combination of coconut milk and water, and when it was done I added some ground ginger, sliced scallions, and chopped cilantro. Finally, a bag of frozen stirfy veggies (with a dash of soy sauce and ginger) completed the meal.
I’m really eager to use this sauce again… maybe next week we’ll try some teriyaki chicken sandwiches, turkey burgers, or grilled tuna. What a great find!
